What the horse meat scandal and migrant abuse have in common and other immigration news

Happy Friday!

Here’s today’s migration news. I’m reading as I post. Thank god for those multi-tasking skills!

Cameron’s mixed message on immigration: who is welcome? Call me crazy, but I think the United Kingdom, with its ailing economy and aging population, will soon come to regret its increasingly tighter immigration policies designed to pander to the right and far right. Study after study has shown that immigrants help economies grow, instead of stealing jobs or straining welfare systems, like David Cameron’s government claims they do.

Slavery, not horse meat, is the real scandal on our doorstep. Ok, I will admit that as a vegan, part of me was gleeful when the news broke that European beef in some cases is actually (partially) horse meat. And I’m not surprised to hear that this industry, like many others, involves migrant abuse.

Some Iranian students complain of discrimination overseas. This story comes from an initiative I really admire, Tehran Bureau.

This one is about the vanishing Latino male in higher education.

This is an interesting video about the journey of canned ravioli. Don’t worry, there’s plenty in it about workers!
